Description
The Irwin 1/4″-28 NF HCS Fractional Tap – Bulk (1423) is a high-performance tool engineered for precision threading. Built from high-carbon steel, it is designed for creating new internal screw threads or rethreading existing ones in a wide variety of materials. This hand threading tap is an essential addition to any toolbox for general-purpose maintenance, repair, and fabrication projects. The plug chamfer style ensures easy starting, making the tapping process more efficient and reliable.
KEY FEATURES AND BENEFITS:
- Precision Threading: The tap is designed to create or clean 1/4″-28 NF threads with a precise Class 2B thread fit, ensuring a high-quality and reliable connection.
- Easy Starting: The plug chamfer has a tapered cutting edge, allowing for easier alignment and a smoother start when beginning the threading process, reducing the chance of misalignment.
- Efficient Chip Removal: The four straight flutes are engineered to effectively remove chips as you cut, preventing clogging and ensuring a cleaner, more efficient threading operation.
- High-Carbon Steel Construction: Made from high-carbon steel, this tap offers a balance of hardness and toughness, providing the strength needed for threading a variety of common materials.

HOW TO USE:
- Drill the pilot hole: Use the correct size drill bit for your material. For a 1/4″-28 NF tap, a #3 drill bit is typically recommended.
- Align the tap: Insert the tap into a tap wrench, ensuring it is centered. Place the tap squarely over the drilled hole.
- Start the thread: Apply light, even pressure and turn the tap clockwise for a right-hand thread. The plug chamfer will help guide the tap into the hole.
- Cut and clear chips: After a half-turn or one full turn, reverse the tap a quarter turn to break off the chips. Repeat this process, turning the tap clockwise to cut and counter-clockwise to clear chips until the full thread depth is achieved.
- Finish the process: Once the thread is fully cut, carefully turn the tap counter-clockwise to remove it from the workpiece.
BENEFITS OF USING IRWIN 1/4″-28 NF HCS FRACTIONAL TAP – BULK (1423):
